SELFIE
MAGIDA EL-KASSIS, OLIVIA JOHNSTON + JENNIFER STEWART
MARCH 17 - APRIL 19, 2015 | KARSH-MASSON GALLERY

The self-portrait has a strong presence both within art history and within popular culture. In the past 20 years society’s collective behaviour surrounding photography – and indeed, the self-portrait – has evolved enormously. El-Kassis, Johnston, and Stewart will consider this phenomenon, first by investigating the role self-portraiture plays within their own practices, and secondly by engaging in the discourse surrounding the self-portrait within modern culture.

51 Fifty-one letters written by my father to my mother during his time at waterloo university Waterloo University depict the prequel to my life. This early courtship lead wayled to their marriage (1973) and my eventual birth (1984). The letters were kept by my mother for 45 years in their original envelopes and then passed onto me. The process of reading and selecting the letters has resulted in more questions than answers.

5 Five letters were selected chosen, and read onto tape and then fed through analogue guitar pedals. The eerie sounds of the recording create a dissonance representative of the 45 years that have passed.

"dad, i hope you don't mind."
